In the demonstration at JW Marriott Hotel, the General Manager physically located outside the venue was able to "show up" on stage to greet the VIP guests.Augmented reality (AR) is featured to project 3D objects on the stage for showcase or presentation. When the famous bartender of JW Marriott Hotel demonstrated how to prepare classic cocktails, the production team spontaneously manipulated the projection of the corresponding ingredients. We acted as the official online live streaming partner of music concerts & live shows, music awards presentation ceremonies, Yahoo interviews, result announcements of listed companies, press conferences, school sports day and more. All these challenges made UDomain an expert and qualified for this difficult task. Besides the practical experience, we got our own CDN platform and 40Gb dedicated Hong Kong bandwidth link to HKIX directly, this advantage allows us to stream your event smoothly to thousands of online viewers.

Although UDomain has spent several years on the communication work with different film crews, we still treat every event as an individual one. Also, we truly understand how to conduct a successful live broadcasting, each party must work closely together. In addition to communicate with Yahoo and Ocean Park closely, we dedicated a technical team to the site one week before the show. During that rehearsal, our Technical team and CS team discussed with the camera team, control panel and the technical team of Yahoo. We talked about the coordination processes and contingency plans that day then collaborated in real-time in multiple rehearsals and on-site testing. All these things were done in order to take every opportunity to fine-tune every technical detail.

Although the rehearsal result was perfect, UDomain insisted to have a final test before the show. As the experience told us, there were lots of unexpected situations might pop up even they were all fine during the rehearsals: the unstable performance of bandwidth, the asynchronous of sound and image, the poor sound quality, etc. We also need to communicate with the film crews so as to prepare the transition arrangements for different section of the show. All these are learnt from different live streaming projects that started from 2010. Finally, we made a big success on this streaming, spectators from different regions watched the opening ceremony using the phone, PC, tablets and other equipment with step HD broadcast, made the opening ceremony become a popular topic.

The client did have experiences of holding small scale online live broadcast, yet the experience, techniques and equipment of live streaming were lacking. UDomain focused efforts in tackling technical problems by providing solutions which support live broadcast on multiple online channels. CDN was proposed to accelerate the connection speed of local and overseas audiences, which will in turn minimize the bad effects on video and audio quality brought by latency, so that the audience can enjoy the show. With these solutions, the client could focus on other aspects of the performance.

Large scale online live broadcast of concerts with on-site fundraising were hardly found before the pandemic. Without a similar example to follow,  the client found it hard in preparation. UDomain, on the other hand, are expert in live broadcasts with several years of experience in holding live broadcast events of different scales, from school sports day to e-sports competition and major award ceremony. After listening to the client’s needs and concerns by our project manager, our technical team acted quickly to prepare for the online concert. Contingency plans as well as on-demand web traffic, Cloud server and cyber security solutions were available as well.

UDomain always keep our professionalism to any event regardless of its size. Technical team members were ever ready, monitoring the network performance & live video quality during testing, rehearsal and throughout the event. As sufficient preparation works were done and communications maintained, even though some of UDomain fellows had to work from home due to pandemic related regulations – a situation well predicted from the beginning of event preparation, equipment were moved to technicians’ homes so that the quality of live broadcast and network stability were unaffected.

Innovative ideas must be supported by certain level of techniques. As it was the first time for the organizer to broadcast a performance online for global audience, they could hardly imagine the technical difficulties. Theatres in Hong Kong were not designed to facilitate online broadcasting, so the first challenge was to see if the broadband network in theatres was enough support the entire show. UDomain acted quickly to communicate with service provider for setting up fiber-optic cable connection in the venue, that fully supports HD online live broadcast of the performance. Then 2 teams of technicians were called upon to rotate between on-site and back-end technical supports in a series of performances, to deal with any unpredictable technical problems. The public performances were welcomed by enthusiastic overseas audiences – from USA to Europe and Middle East. Yet certain routing techniques were required for online live broadcasts to overseas. Soon as getting feedbacks from overseas audience on instability concerns, UDomain immediately coordinated with overseas server farms in Europe and Australia to provide stable CDN network connection for routing purpose, including locations in North America, Europe and Australia. Audience from anywhere in the world can enjoy the great performances with stable video streaming.

PROJECT ROUNDABOUT READER’S THEATRE “SEE YOU SOON”

This is 2nd cooperated project with the same client, but UDomain would never simply copy what have been done last time out. Clients have always been our 1st priority, and we take every opportunity to understand clients’ needs in order to provide suitable solutions within budgets. As the planned Aaron Kwok online concert targeted audiences from Hong Kong, overseas as well as mainland China, a comprehensive CDN service to accelerate connection and minimize network latency, as well as contingency plans to deal with sudden increase of audience were much needed.

Although major technical issues were not found in Sam Hui online concert, UDomain left no place for complacency or negligence. Given the large scale of Aaron Kwok online concert, it was predicted that millions of audience could watch the show at the same time. Several tests were conducted between UDomain and the client to deal with such large online traffic. Our Project Manager followed up the process of tasks of different parties from time to time, coordinating with lots of detail such as rehearsal venue, test particulars and online concert rundowns. By facilitating division of work and putting the right people in the right place, work efficiency has then been ensured.

In the testing procedure, UDomain have already reserved network resources dedicated to deal with the potential unstable network connection brought by huge audience watching the live show in the same time. Even when there were some 20 overseas public media, publishing platforms and sponsors contacted UDomain for permission to broadcast the event, the professional UDomain technical team were able to set up overseas server farm in no time to facilitate the sudden increase of broadcasts to overseas. Together with global coverage of CDN, we successfully channeled online traffic well to over 80 social platforms all over the world and let over 2 million of audience enjoy high quality and seamless live performance.

As the clock is ticking, The expert team of UDomain, which consists of a Project Manager, the representative of Web Design team and System Architect, decided to take an active role: provides feedback after reviewing the requirements of the client and invited the client for a conference call to discuss all the technical details of the registration webpage and broadcast platform. During the conversation, we shared the experience with the client and provide some valuable suggestions, such as the position of components and the authority level of admins, in order to let the client well acknowledge the potential technical challenges and come up with the solution before it appears. Consequently, the registration webpage was launched on time, moreover, we have set up a security workflow to handle the data collected. To us, security is as important as efficiency.

Although the registration page is highly appreciated by the client, UDomain team didn’t pause our steps but work harder. We worked closely with the client and had the tests of network speed, signal, and chatroom function to ensure the platform is properly function. As there were more than three thousand attendees, it would turn into a huge burden to the system if all these attendees join the streaming and chatroom simultaneously. Therefore, our team ran the stress test before the event and upgrade the ram and storage of servers according to the result. By doing so, an absolute smooth and stable streaming with high density (HD) resolution quality was guaranteed. On the event day, UDomain team not only performed the real-time monitoring and technical support as usual but also worked closely with the client and handled all the ad hoc requirements. As a result, all three thousand attendees could enjoy high-quality streaming and exchange their thoughts through the chatroom. A mission impossible is finally completed.
